4 Type 7 "S" Base (1893-99) Smooth Woodworking Plane. For your consideration is this Stanley no. 4 S casting, totally restored and tuned to perfection. All components are original to this plane. This was a barn find in poor shape.

I stripped what little japanning remained and replaced it with several coats of high solids engine enamel, followed by minwax clear laquer. This I heat cured in a low oven for a very hard and durable finish. This is a widely accepted restoration method. The body was then coated in CRC rust preventative followed by paste wax.

Next I lapped the sole to 150 grit, a flat sole is essential to high performance. The back of the blade was also lapped and polished. The bevel is hollow ground and hand sharpened with diamond plates, finishing on a leather strop with green honing compound. The blade is full length, having seen light use. I also tuned the chip breaker to ensure solid contact with the blade.

This is an old style chip breaker consistent with type 7. The tote and knob were also striped and sanded, then refinished tru oil. This finish is typically used for gun stocks due to its excellent durability. The item "Antique Vintage Stanley No.
