When it came in it had a old Record cutter and back iron fitted. It is exactly the same size as a STANLEY NO 4 1/2 but here lies the difference.
IT IS UNMARKED, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO MARK WHATSOEVER. THE FROG IS CAST INTO THE BODY, BUT IT WILL ONLY ACCEPT A RELATIVELY THIN BLADE AND BACK IRON.
AT FIRST I THOUGHT THIS HAD BEEN MODIFIED BUT CLEARLY IT HAS NOT. THE HANDLE IS ELEGANTLY SHAPED AND A TOTALLY DIFFERENT FITTING TO THE RECORD AND STANLEY PLANES.I HAVE FITTED A OLDER CAST STEEL CUTTER AND BACK IRON THAT WAS THINNER THAN NORMAL AS CLEARLY ANY THICKER CUTTER CANT BE FITTED FOR THE BRASS LEVER CAP TO WORK AND HOLD THE CUTTER. THE PLANE IS MUCH HEAVIER THAN A STANLEY, GOOD THICK SIDE CHEEKS.
THE SOLE IS FLAT AND THE MOUTH MUCH TIGHTER THAN THE STANLEY. IT IS OBVIOUSLY TAP AND SET ADJUSTABLE.BUT IT DOES TAKE A CLEAN FINE SHAVING WHEN SET UP CORRECTLY. TO SUMMARISE, AN ENIGMA, BUT PERHAPS SOME PLANE AFFICIONADOS CAN ENLIGHTEN ME. AS A PURE ESTIMATE I WOULD PITCH THIS AROUND THE EARLY 20th CENTURY. THIS IS AS ACCURATE DESCRIPTION AS POSSIBLE, OF THE PLANE. This item is in the category "Collectables\Tools & Collectable Hardware\Collectable Tools\Carpentry & Woodworking Tools\Planes".
