L & I J WHITE woodworking chisel slick 3'' wide blade 26'' Long vintage framing tool. White was established by two brothers, Leonard and Ichabod Jewett White. Their father, Samuel White, was born in North Coventry, Connecticut and moved to Buffalo, NY in 1837. In the same year Leonard and Ichabod moved from North Coventry to Monroe, Michigan and established edge tool shop there. We don't know for sure what kind of tools Whites produced.

We can assume however that they offered usual repertoire of basic edge tools. Tools with Monroe marking are very rare. We know that one documented drawknife with marking "L & I J White, Monroe" exist. Another tool they made was axes. The original of this letter is in the Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public Library. A nice heavy duty timber framers, barn builders, or shipbuilders slick.
