The plane was in good condition before it's restoration, which is always the key to a good restoration if you ask me. Tim did a stellar job on the sole as alwas and the Rosewood handles on this one came out particularly nicely. A rare oppertunity to own a beautiful antique Stanley No10 carriage makers rebate plane in better than new condition. As far as our restoration process goes, we strip the planes to component parts and ensure everything is present and correct, any damaged parts are repaired if possible or replaced with an identical part from our extensive stock of donor planes. If the japanning has failed then the bodys are blasted and re-enamelled although we always try and keep the original finish wherever possible, if the plane was in a painted finish from new then we remove and re-finish by default.
The castings are then sent to our friend and go-to engineering genius, Tim at FNL services, Tim works his magic with the surface grinder and the planes return to us ground flatter, smoother and with the sides more parallel than they ever were from the factory. It's amazing how much warp, twist and wear some of them have prior to grinding.
While Tim works on the castings we work on the wooden parts, stripping them back to bare wood, re-finishing them with a shellac sealing coat, floating on replicas of the original transfers and sealing them up with 3 coats of a particularly hardwearing Polyurethane varnish. We sharpen and hone the iron, clean up the anciliary hardware and generally get everything ready for reassembly. Once the parcel arrives with all the lovel freshly ground soles arrive we clean off the protective grease and set about assembling and tuning them. Each plane gets set up and tested in it's intended use before being cleaned and photographed. The end result is a traditional Stanley Bailey bench plane that is finished to a far higher standard than stock and which requires no further tuning in order to go to work, unlike all new and 99% of used planes.We can offer the same service for your planes too, message us for details. It'll require a wipe down before use. The plane will also be wrapped in a sheet of VCI paper to further reduce the liklihood of corrosion.
