Sukemaru Timber Chisel (aka tataki nomi). Hand forged by blacksmith Usui-san. Sukemaru is a highly respected maker in Japan. Well known for producing the best quality HSS chisels on the market (their WS#1 is also very good). Sukemaru HSS (high speed steel) chisels are no longer made using lamination. The contemporary model is entirely HSS and therefore more cumbersome to sharpen. The chisels are stamped with. High speed steel will hold an edge greater than almost all other steel types due to its high carbide content. These perform exceptionally well on very hard exotic woods and glue laminated materials. These were forged 20+ years ago. The laminated steel has now stabilized and warping is no longer a concern. (newly forged tools will warp as they age due to the tensions inherit in laminated blades). They will come oiled and protected with camellia oil all natural corrosion inhibiting oil made from green tea plant. Handles is made of Japanese red oak by Fukutarou - see maker's stamp on handle.

The hoops are hand forged by the blacksmith, see seam line in detail photos. This is a highly specialized and professional grade chisel. Please ask any questions you may have.
