Vintage Woodworking Miter Jack, Wooden 1800's
Here is a Vintage Woodworking Miter Jack, Wooden, Used: This vintage Miter Jack is in very good condition. The base is 23 1/2 long, 7 1/4 wide and just under 2 in height. 27 1/1 long when closed all the way. This Miter Jack has about 6 1/2 opening capacity.
Miter Jacks are work holding vise type tools that provide flat planes to work from while maintaining the needed angle. They are mainly used with planes however saws and other tools can be used with them. They prevent corner and edge blow outs and chipping while providing precision angles.
According to Lee Valleys Woodworking Newsletter, Vol. 5, Issue 5, May 2011, Miter Jacks or Miter Shute Jacks date back to before 1700. They also said that most of them were not commercially made but made by individuals. We believe that this is the case with our Miter Jack. Interestingly, all of the pictures that we have seen of Miter Jacks have the wooden lead screw on the right hand side.This one is unusual because it is on the left side. We believe that this tool was made by and for a left handed craftsman. The jaws measure 7 deep and 6 3/8 high. The front faces of the jaws are at a 45o angle and the back faces are at a 90o angle.
The wooden lead screw measures 1 7/16 in diameter and it has a 4 TPI thread count. The turning handle is hexagonal and measures 1 11/16 across the flats. The lead screw has some flat spots, chips and hair-line cracks. It is in good usable condition, as is the Miter Jack itself. There is a triangular chip on the face of the front jaw and one on the top of the face of the back jaw.Neither of these should affect the precision use of this Miter Jack. We have not cleaned or restored this tool in any way, as we leave those decisions up to the eventual owner. There is a 3 x 2 3/16 flat brass plate at the end of the lead screw.
This plate connects the lead screw with the back jaw. This plate is exquisitely etched with triangles, lines, curves, circles and squares. There are no names or ID markings, unless the designs on the plate are from a particular person or company. The 2 angles of the jaws are 45o and 90o. We could not find any names, initials or ID markings of any kind. The main screw is wood.Overall great shape especially for its age. Some scratches and dings but still a user.
